THE MANATEE SONG
©2004 Shelly Potter
C. Shells – “Cool Cats”
1. Mama manatee and her calf baby, swimming and playing in the warm sea
Mama she teaches her calf baby, ways of the world, ways of manatee
2. Mama manatee she’s a really big mama; she weigh almost 3,000 pounds
This gentle mama has a sweet way of talking
She likes to squeak and make chirping sounds
CHORUS: Swim, swim, in the warm waters. Swim, swim, where you are free
Swim, swim, man must be careful. There are not many manatee
3. Eat all your veggies say mama manatee.
Soon you’ll be eating 100 pounds a day
Find warm rivers when oceans get colder. Then all winter we can play
4. Baby sees scars on the back of her mama.
Ask her mama how this came to be
There’s not many manatee left in the water; now listen closely to me
5. Beware of the shark in the ocean and alligator near the land
But most of all beware, beware of the boats of man
6. If you hear the sound of a motor, dive to the bottom as quick as can be
If the boats slow, you will be okay
If it’s too fast you’ll be scarred worse than me
7. Mama manatee and her calf baby, swimming and playing in the warm sea
Man and manatee can live together; if man be kind, show humanity
