THE UNICORN SONG

©Shel Silverstein

C. Shells – “Just for Fun!”  CD/Cassette

CHORUS: There were green alligators and long-necked geese

                Humpty-backed camels and chimpanzees

There were cats and rats and elephants as sure as you’re born

But the loveliest of all was the unicorn

1.  A long time ago when the Earth was green

There were more kinds of animals than you’d ever seen

They’d run around free while the Earth was being born

But the loveliest of all was the unicorn

2.  Now God seen some sinning and it caused him pain

He said, “Stand back, I’m gonna make it rain.”

He said, “Hey, Brother Noah, I’ll tell you what to do.

Build me a floating zoo. And take some of those…”

CHORUS: Green alligators and long-necked geese

                Humpty-backed camels and chimpanzees

Take some cats and rats and elephants as sure as you’re born

But don’t you forget my unicorn

3.  Old Noah was there to answer the call

He finished up making the ark just as the rain started falling

He marched in the animals two-by-two

And called out as they went through, “Hey, Lord, I got your…”

CHORUS: Green alligators and long-necked geese

Your humpty-backed camels and your chimpanzees

Some cats and rats and elephants but Lord I’m so forlorn

I just can’t see no unicorn

4.  Then Noah looked out through the driving rain

The unicorns were laughing playing silly little games

Kicking and splashing while the rain was pouring

     Oh, them foolish unicorns

CHORUS: There were green alligators and long-necked geese

                 Humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees

So close the door ‘cause the rain was pouring

We just can’t wait for no unicorns

5.  The ark started moving as it drifted with the tide

The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried

The water came down and slowly floated them away

That’s why you’ll never see a unicorn to this day

CHORUS: But you’ll see green alligators and long-necked geese

                 Humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees

Cats and rats and elephants as sure as you’re born

You’re never gonna see no unicorns
